Using Generative AI to Support Your Scholarship

Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly reshaping the research process, disrupting how we generate, synthesize, and interpret new knowledge. This workshop will trace the evolution of GenAI in research, highlighting key breakthroughs that have enabled more sophisticated reasoning and information retrieval. We will examine cutting-edge tools such as O1 Deep Research, which utilizes chain-of-thought prompt engineering to enhance structured reasoning, and large-context retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems like NotebookLM, which offer researchers more comprehensive, context-aware insights. Beyond technical capabilities, we will critically explore the ethical and epistemological questions surrounding GenAI’s role in research—considering where it should assist, where it should lead, and where human judgment must remain central. The goal of this workshop is to equip researchers with a deeper understanding of AI’s evolving impact on the research process and prepare them to navigate the opportunities and challenges of this new era.
