As teacher/scholars, faculty at UR care deeply about their students; but what can you do when teaching takes over everything you do to the detriment of other parts of your life and work? In this seminar, we will examine teaching takeover, what contributes to it, why it matters, and how changes to teaching can improve instructor wellness.

Chavella T. Pittman, PhD earned her PhD in Sociology and an MA in Higher Education from the University of Michigan. She is currently Professor of Sociology at Dominican University. Her research expertise includes research methods & statistics, higher education, and interpersonal interactions.

Her work can be found in peer reviewed journals (e.g., Teaching Sociology, Journal of Negro Education) and scholarly books (e.g., Difficult Subjects), as well as broader publications (e.g., The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed). Dr. Pittman is also the author of Empowered: A Woman Faculty of Color's Guide to Teaching and Thriving, published by University of Oklahoma Press in 2025.

She is also the founder of Effective & Efficient Faculty, a faculty development company that provides individuals and institutions with consultation, coaching, courses and workshops to support faculty success.
